What is Powder Coating?

Powder coating is a dry finishing process in which a colored powder is applied to a metal surface. The powder sticks to the metal surface because it is electrostatically charged. Once covered in powder, the metal object is inserted into an oven and cooked at around 400°F. This process melts the powder onto the metal surface and cures it, forming a kind of plastic-like layer. Once cured, powder coated metal surfaces are resistant to scratches, chips, rust, and other aesthetic damages.

Is Power Coating Better Than Painting?

One of the biggest advantages of powder coating is that, unlike paint, it doesn’t use any solvents. By eliminating the use of solvents, powder coating is a much more environmentally friendly finishing process. It’s also less wasteful because the unused powder is collected and reused on the next job.

Powder coating is also much more durable than paint. Unlike paint which dries onto a primer, powder coating is baked right onto the metal surface. It forms a solid layer on the surface that, while not indestructible, is far more durable and chip resistant than paint. If the powder coating has been applied properly, there won’t be any rust at all.

How Many Colors and Glosses are Available With Powder Coating?

The powder used in powder coating can be mixed to match almost any color in the rainbow. This is a huge advantage for clients looking that have a specific color in mind. From the common to the unique, we can create just about any color you want.

Powder coat finishes are typically grouped into four types of gloss. Each category has variations within it. The four types of powder coat finishes are:

    • Matte
    • Satin
    • Medium
    • Full gloss

There is also a wide range of textures available for powder coating. Give us a call to discuss the full range of options we offer at Motorsport Powder Coating.
